R4i Ultra Card Firmware Upgrade and Driver Installation Setup Guide

Important:
Please note that not every R4i Ultra needs firmware fix!
Please follow the R4i Ultra Driver Setup Guide to setup the card first.
If you get the error message like this :
An error has occured. Press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off. Please refer to the Nintendo DSi Operations Manual for details.
Please check the firmware version of your DSi or 3DS according to these two steps:
- Click SETTING (with the Tool Icon) on the main menu
- Check the right hand corner of the top screen which says VER 1.x
Then choose the correspondent firmware fix guide below to upgrade your R4i Ultra to be compatible with your DS console.

DS Compatibility
The following consoles are supported: DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL & 3DS
For DSi & DSi XL, the supported firmware versions are: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, & 1.4.1.
For 3DS, the supported firmware version is: 3DS V 1.0.0, 2.0.0, 2.1.0.
Preparation (Checklist Before Installation)
Hardware
1 x DS Lite / DSi /DSi XL / 3DS
- A DSi console with firmware lower than 1.4.1 (1.4.1E, 1.4.1J, 1.4.1U & 1.4.1A)
- If you don’t have a DSi with firmware lower than 1.4.1, you have to use a DS Lite console
1 x R4i Ultra Card (Slot-1)
1 x USB Reader
1 x Micro SD/SDHC Memory Card
Software (Please Click the Driver / Firmware Name for the Latest Download)

Installation
Please upgrade the firmware first before installing the driver if you want to use the R4i Ultra on the DSi with the latest compatible firmware.
Format a Micro SD/SDHC Card
- Using Windows XP/Vista/7 Format Tool
- Using Panasonic Memory Card Format Program
- Using Mac Memory Card Format Tool
Using Windows XP/Vista/7 Format Tool
After inserting the microSD into the card reader, go to My Computer.
b) Right click the driver representing the microSD memory card.
c) Choose Format

d) Click Start to format the memory card in FAT32

Using Panasonic Memory Card Format Software
Note:
If your memory cards have capacity bigger than 32GB, please download the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards Format Software.
If your memory cards have capacity equal or smaller than 32GB, please download the SD/SDHC Memory Cards Format Software.

- Insert SD/SDHC Memory Card into reader/writer.
- Click on [Start], point to [All Programs] -> [Panasonic] -> [SD Formatter VX.X], and click on [SD Formatter VX.X].
- “X.X” means the version number of SD Memory Card Formatting Software.
- If “User Account Control” window is displayed on the screen, please click on [Arrow].
- The main window is displayed on the screen.
- Select the target drive by drive list and check SD/SDHC Memory Card size.
- Click on [Format].
- After clicking on it, confirmation window is displayed on the screen. Here, if [OK] is clicked, this software executes the format operation. On the contrary, if [Cancel] is clicked, this software cancels the format operation and returns to the main window.
- The following status window is displayed on the screen during the format operation.
Note: [Cancel] on this window is available only if either “FULL (Erase ON)” or “FULL (Erase OFF)” is selected as format type option. If “QUICK” is selected as format type option, this button is not available. - After the format operation completion, click [OK] and remove the Memory Card from your PC.
- Reinsert the memory card to the PC to start using the memory card.
Using Mac Memory Card Format Tool
- Plug your memory card reader into a USB port on your Mac. Insert the microSD / microSDHC card into the memory card reader's microSD / microSDHC slot, and the microSD / microSDHC card will mount on your Mac desktop.
- In an open Finder window, single-click "Applications" in the Side-Bar and scroll down to find the Utilities folder. Find Disk Utility in the Utilities folder and double-click the "Disk Utility" application to launch it.
- In the opened Disk Utility application, single-click to select the microSD / microSDHC card in the left-hand Drives column. Then, single-click to select the "Erase" button in the top row of radio buttons. Select the format MS-DOS (FAT) to format the microSD / microSDHC card on the "Volume Format" pop-up button. When you have finished selecting the formatting options, click "Erase."
- A new dialogue box will pop up in "Disk Utility," asking if you are sure you wish to erase the microSD / microSDHC card. Caution: Erasing the microSD / microSDHC card will permanently erase any files. Make sure you have backed up any file you wish to keep. To continue with the formatting process, click "Erase."
- Once the microSD / microSDHC card has been erased, it will mount on your Mac desktop just as any other removable drive.
R4i Ultra Firmware Fix for 3DS 2.1.0
Note: Please plug your DS console to the wall to make sure that the DS console power supply will not be interrupted during the firmware upgrade process.
1. Format your MicroSD card.
2. Download the driver (AKAIO 1.8.6a.R4U )and firmware (R4i fw update for 3DS v2.1.0).
3. Unzip the files downloaded (using Winrar) on your PC.
a. Winrar can be downloaded from www.download.com by searching for Winrar at the Search.
b. Unzip the files mentioned under the Software Preparation above, you will get:

4. Now copy all the aboveeight files to the root of the Micro SD /SDHC memory card.
5. Plug in the Micro SD card to the R4i Ultra and insert the R4i Ultra to the DS console.
6. Select the Micro SD/SDHC Card icon on the main operating system.

7. Select the firmware file according to your DS console by pressing A on the right hand side control pad.

8. When you see the following, please follow the instruction to eject the card and insert it again. Then press B to continue.

11. The icon on the main menu has been changed to the following icon. The icon means you have upgraded the R4i Ultra Firmware successfully. Please enjoy yourself.

R4i Ultra Firmware Fix for 3DS 2.0.0
Note: Please plug your DS console to the wall to make sure that the DS console power supply will not be interrupted during the firmware upgrade process.
1. Format your MicroSD card.
2. Download the driver (AKAIO 1.8.6a.R4U)and firmware (R4i fw_update for 3DS v2.0.0).
3. Unzip the files downloaded (using Winrar) on your PC and you will get:

4. Now copy all the above eight files to the root of the Micro SD /SDHC memory card.
5. Plug in the Micro SD card to the R4i Ultra and insert the R4i Ultra to the DS console.

R4i Ultra Firmware Fix For 3DS 1.0.0
Important: if you want to update you R4i Ultra on your 3DS console, you need a DSi (XL) console is having a firmware version lower than 1.4.1 or a DS Lite console . Please take note, the firmware is different from the driver.
To Check Your DSi Firmware Version:
- Click SETTING (with the Tool Icon) on the main menu
- Check the right hand corner of the top screen which says VER 1.x
Before flashing the R4i Ultra, check the following:
- If you can see the following icon , good news for you. Your R4i Ultra has been flashed with the Nintendo 3DS firmware fix. Please refer to here to install the driver directly.
- If you can’t see the above icon, you need a DS Lite or DSi to flash the R4i Ultra.
- Plug your DS console to the wall to make sure that the DS console power supply will not be interrupted during the firmware upgrade process.
- Download the driver (AKAIO 1.8.6a.R4U )and firmware (R4i fw update for 3DS).
- Unzip the files downloaded (using Winrar) on your PC.
- Winrar can be downloaded from www.download.com by searching for Winrar at the Search.
- Unzip the files mentioned under the Software Preparation above, you will get:

- If you have multiple R4i Ultra cards that you wish to update all in a row, run on the DS Lite console using r4ifw_update_3ds_DSL.nds
- Now copy the all the above seven files to the root folder of the Micro SD /SDHC memory card.
- Plug in the Micro SD/SDHC to the R4i Ultra and insert the R4i Ultra to the DS console.
- Select the Micro SD/SDHC Card icon on the main operating system
- Select the firmware file by pressing A on the right hand side control pad.
- For DSi: r4ifw_update_3ds_DSi.nds
- For DS Lite : r4ifw_update_3ds_DSL.nds
- When you see the following, please follow the instruction to eject the card and insert it again. Then press B to continue.

- You will be prompted if you want to update the firmware as follows:
- Press Start to continue.
- The following screen shows that the update has started.

- The following screen shows that the update is halfway done.
- The following screen shows that the update has been completed. Congratulation! Restart your DS now.
- The icon on the main menu has been changed to the following icon. The icon means you have upgraded the R4i Ultra Firmware successfully.
R4i Ultra Firmware Fix For DSi Firmware 1.4.1
Important: if you want to update you R4i Ultra on your DSi console, please make sure that your DSi console is having a firmware version lower than 1.4.1. If your DSi has been updated to version 1.4.1, you will need to use a DS Lite console to update your R4i Ultra. Please take note, the firmware is different from the driver.
To Check Your DSi Firmware Version:
- Click SETTING (with the Tool Icon) on the main menu
- Check the right hand corner of the top screen which says VER 1.x
- Plug your DS console to the wall to make sure that the DS console power supply will not be interrupted during the firmware upgrade process.
- Download the official driver (R4i&R4U v1.56 kernel)and firmware(R4iULTRA 1.41 update).
- Unzip the files downloaded (using Winrar) on your PC.
- Winrar can be downloaded from www.download.com by searching for Winrar at the Search.
- Unzip the files mentioned under the Software Preparation above, you will get:

- For DSi : R4iULTRA_update_141_DSi.nds
- For DS Lite : R4iULTRA_update_141_DSL.nds
- If you have multiple R4i Ultra cards that you wish to update all in a row, run on the DS Lite console using R4iULTRA_update_141_DSL.nds
- Now copy the all the above seven files to the root folder of the Micro SD /SDHC memory card.





- Plug in the Micro SD/SDHC to the R4i Ultra and insert the R4i Ultra to the DS console.
- You will see the WARNING – HEALTH AND SAFETY. Please touch the touch screen or press button A to continue.

- For DSi or DSi XL, screen will be changed to the following icon with words Danny Phantom Urban Jungle THQ. Please touch the icon or press button A to continue.

- Then you will get the following Loading Screen which will last for several seconds.

- Then you will see a screen as follows. Please touch the screen or press button A to continue.

- Select the firmware file by pressing A on the right hand side control pad.

- For DSi : R4iULTRA_update_141_DSi.nds
- For DS Lite : R4iULTRA_update_141_DSL.nds
- You will get a loading screen for several seconds. When you see the following, please follow the instruction to eject the card and insert it again. Then press B to continue.

- You will be prompted if you want to update the firmware as follows:

- Press Start on the DS to continue.
- The following screen shows that the update has started.

- The following screen shows that the update is halfway done.

- The following screen shows that the update has been completed. Congratulation! Restart your DS now.
- The next step is to install the driver.

- Now copy the all the above four files to the root folder of the Micro SD/SDHC memory card.
- Copy your own files, including music, movies, pictures and other data to the Micro SD/SDHC memory card.
- Plug in the Micro SD/SDHC to the R4i Ultra. Insert the R4i Ultra with the microSD into the slot 1 of the DS console. Turn on the DS console.
- You will see the WARNING – HEALTH AND SAFETY. Please touch the touch screen or press button A to continue.

- For DSi or DSi XL, screen will be changed to the following icon with words Danny Phantom Urban Jungle THQ. Please touch the icon or press button A to continue.

- Then you will get the following Loading Screen which will last for several seconds.

- Last but not the least, the screen will become as follows. That means you can enjoy your portable multimedia centre on DS Lite / DSi right now.
